Judge Mosman

Judge Michael W. Mosman is the Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the District of Oregon.  He was appointed to the bench in late 2003, and since then, has been selected to serve on the panel of judges handling Multi-District Litigation and the Civil Rules Committee tasked with revising Rule 23. He also serves on the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court.

Judge Mosman was born in Oregon and raised in Lewiston, Idaho. He graduated from BYU-Idaho and Utah State University with a degree in Psychology, and then attended BYU Law School, where he served as Editor-in-Chief of the Law Review. Following graduation, he clerked for Judge Malcolm Wilkey of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit and Justice Lewis Powell of the United States Supreme Court.

After his clerkships, Judge Mosman briefly worked for Miller Nash in Portland, Oregon, before becoming an Assistant U.S. Attorney in 1988. While there, he handled both violent crimes and drug cases, eventually serving as the Organized Crime Strike Force Chief. In early 2001, Judge Mosman was appointed U.S. Attorney and was one of about ten U.S. Attorneys chosen to serve on the Attorney General’s Advisory Committee, a select group tasked with helping develop policy for the field. He also led the prosecution of one of the first post-9/11 terrorism cases.

Judge Mosman is married to Suzanne Hogan, and together they have 5 children and 4 grandchildren.
