Luncheon - Church-State Issues Facing Split-off Church Groups

by Eric Sohlgren and Daniel Lula of Payne & Fears
Eric Sohlgren and Daniel Lula, of Payne & Fears LLP, represent a number of religious entities in legal disputes with their parent organizations, including the Episcopal Church, that have taken them to the California and United States Supreme Courts, where they have explored novel and significant issues at the intersection of civil law and church law. Mr. Sohlgren and Mr. Lula will explain the historical and doctrinal background of the disputes, and take us through the twists and turns of litigating church-state issues which have required mastery of obscure Canon Law, but have immediate practical effect on the rights of religious organizations and worshippers in Orange County and across the country.
